A Visual Narrative

Welcome to A Visual Narrative, where every post acts as a case study. I build narratives around botanical subjects, focusing on elements like fragility. Using a macro lens and studio flash lights, I emphasise texture to bring these stories to life. Join me as I explore the intersection of nature, narrative, and technical execution.

Unlock the Micro-World: Learn Studio Natural History Photography

Eager to master the dramatic art of natural history photography from the comfort of your own space? Let me bring the studio to you! My entire teaching setup is fully mobile, allowing me to conduct custom, hands-on workshops at your home or chosen location. These classes are highly personalised and can be shared with friends, although I recommend no more than three participants to ensure dedicated attention.

If you're interested in transforming small specimens into stunning visual narratives, please reach out via the Contacts Page. We can discuss how to tailor the lesson and adjust the cost based on your group size. While I am based in Nottingham and usually work within this area, I am always happy to have a chat about your needs.

About me

Hello! I'm delighted you've stopped by. I'm David, I'm not just a photographer; I'm a visual storyteller whose journey spans decades, driven by a relentless curiosity and a passion for photography and the visual narrative.

For over twenty-five years, my primary mission has been in the education sector, sharing the transformative power of visual narrative. This commitment to teaching is my greatest passion—it's about empowering others to see the world with intention and to master the technical skills needed to truly create.

The Fusion of Art and Natural History

While my foundation is built on documentary photography—capturing the grand narratives of the world—my deepest creative excitement lies in the realm of Natural History.

I treat the small, hidden details of nature as grand subjects worthy of epic documentation:

  • In the Field: I still relish the challenge of working outdoors, using macro lenses to find minute worlds, telephoto lenses to bridge vast distances, and field flash to sculpt light on fleeting moments.

  • The Studio: This is where I find my true joy. Working with my vast personal collection of natural history—from things in jars to the most intricate beetles—I transform my studio into a controlled environment for ultimate creative expression. Here, I use light not just to illuminate, but to build drama and reveal textures that are invisible to the naked eye.

Master of All Systems

My work demands versatility, and I’m proud to be fluent across major camera platforms, ensuring the focus remains on the image, not the gear. I shoot with Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm systems. While my preferred lighting setup is the reliable Godox flash system, my experience spans many others, allowing me to teach the principles of light control, regardless of the brand.

My goal is simple: to combine the observational rigor of a documentarian with the controlled artistry of a studio photographer, and then to teach you how to do the same across any genre you choose. Let's start creating!
